Why Choose Pavers Over Tile?

Feb 11th 2015 at 2:16 AM

Hardscaping your yard requires that you consider budget, geographic location, and space while not ignoring taste when deciding on materials. The many factors involved can make this decision difficult. It pays to carefully examine options to ensure that the final product delivers exactly what you want.

Tile and pavers are just two hardscape materials available for backyard projects. Were they to be categorized together, they would differ markedly in the aesthetic effects they produce versus materials such as concrete and gravel. However, when set against each other, tile and pavers are qualitatively different. The distinction merits thorough contemplation when creating an outdoor space.

Tile offers a lot of design options and may seem like the perfect choice for a backyard patio. There are many color, shape, and texture variants, which allows for creative layouts, from simple and clean to highly intricate. Materials include ceramic, porcelain, glass, concrete, and natural stone.

However, tile is a relatively expensive material, and can be almost double the cost of pavers. Further, not all tile materialis cut out for high-traffic outdoor areas. Some tiles are slippery when wet, and yard machines can scratch or crack tile surfaces. The elements can play havoc with coloring, and, unless sealed annually, groutcan fade or wear away. Any irregularities in the foundation on which tiles have been set can lead to loosening or even breakage. Repairs are not always possible, and unless you are handy, tile replacement means bringing in an expert, which requires paying a premium for labor. Regardless of who performs the fix, you have to hope the new tile and grout matches well to the existing material lest that patch stick out like a sore thumb.

Pavers may not bring quite the same elegance as tiles, but they possess the right kind of durability and strength needed for many outdoor settings. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. Made of brick, concrete, and stone, and available in a variety of shapes and color options, pavers offer a vast range of functional and design possibilities. They can be used for patios, walkways, and driveways in a myriad of beautiful configurations, including circular, herringbone, basket weave, European fan, and running bond patterns.

Such versatility means that pavers can complement many different architectural styles, while affording you the artistic license to set the tone you want for that space. Their rustic character harmonizes with landscaping and creates an easy transitional flow from indoor to outdoor, tying disparate elements of the property together. Price, flexibility, and natural beauty make pavers an excellent choice for almost any outdoor setting.
