What to Expect When Getting a Checkup

Nov 30th 2015 at 11:43 PM

If it has been a while since the last time you visited a physician for a checkup, you may want to know what to expect. When you already have some type of idea as to what will happen ahead of time, you can start to feel more optimistic about the experience. After all, it is important to schedule routine checkups to ensure that you stay in good health.

When you first arrive at the appointment, the physician may need you to stand on the scale to determine both your height and weight. The information about your height and weight is written down, allowing the physician to determine whether or not you are currently at a healthy weight. After stepping down from the scale, you may then need to bend over and touch your toes, which allows the physician to check for any spinal problems, such as scoliosis. You may feel a bit weird bending over in the office, but it only takes a few seconds of your time. In fact, this type of test is referred to as the Adam’s forward bend test.

Once you have completed the test, the physician may check your blood pressure and request to check your lymph nodes to ensure there are no unusual lumps or bumps. Swollen lymph nodes may be a huge sign of thyroid cancer, which is why it is essential for the physician to check this area of the body. After checking for any swelling, your doctor might ask you a few different questions about your health and how you often feel throughout the day.

If you have different concerns about your health, it is a good idea to bring those concerns up during your checkup. For example, you may be having trouble sleeping at night. If you feel like you are starting to suffer from insomnia, getting advice from the doctor would be a great idea. Any other problems you may have, such as hemorrhoids, fibromyalgia and even chronic fatigue should be mentioned at the checkup. The physician could decide to prescribe some type of medication to help with certain problems, but he or she may refer you to a specialist for further treatment as well.

Checkups are meant to help you take control of your health. Whether you feel sick or not, visiting the doctor can benefit you in a number of ways. If you want to find out more about check ups in San Diego, check out the site for extra information.
