What to Expect from an Opera Performance?

Apr 19th 2020 at 10:26 PM

Opera has been around since hundreds of years and is full of tradition. It is a thrilling display of incredible singing, scenery, costuming and plots filled with love, life, death, tragedy and much more. You can always find something that you can relate to, irrespective of where your interest lies. The unique factor about opera is the use of music to convey an entire story. This is based on the feeling that music can communicate people’s reactions and emotions better than words or pictures. So, if you’re looking to attend an opera performance, here are some tips to get the most out of your experience.

1. What to Wear?

Opera performances are a chance to show off a bit, dress to impress, but being comfortable is also important. Dressing up in formal or semi-formal is a good way to go.

2. Being in Time

Being early is essential in opera. If anything, timing is the most important thing as most theatres won’t seat late guests and you can run the risk of miss the opening bit.

3. Intermission

Operas are usually 2-3 hours long or more. Thereby, take advantage of the interval. Use the restroom, get snacks or a drink, stretch a bit, or enjoy the interiors of the opera house. When you see lights flickering or hear low chimes, it means the next part is going to start soon and you should get back to your seat. These signals might be familiar if you have been to other performances like ballets or plays.

4. When to Clap?

In Opera, applause is usually kept for the end of an act, or solo. Sometimes, there is silence after a part or song, but that is not an indication of applause. You can show your enthusiasm towards the end of an Opera Performance.

The more you know about something, the more you can cherish it. The concept of opera had been developing many years before the first opera was written. Opera has a rich and fascinating history and is also a vibrant art form that is continuing to grow today.
