What Constitutes Domestic Violence?

Apr 4th 2015 at 2:13 AM

Domestic violence is any pattern of behavior that is used to dominate and intimidate a partner. It can be inflicted by both men and women. It most often occurs between spouses. However, children can also be victims of domestic abuse. While most often associated with physical abuse, domestic violence can take on many different forms.

An emotional abuser uses manipulation and words to prey on his or her partner’s emotions. Name calling and yelling are all common occurrences. He will also take the time to humiliate his partner in order to prove domination. He may act controlling and jealous, which can lead to isolation from friends and family. This type of abuser will also keep close tabs on where his partner goes and why. While physical abuse might not be present, it’s common for threats of harm to happen frequently.

Financial abuse occurs when one party uses money to control her partner. She may begin stalking her spouse to monitor spending habits. Even if her partner works, she may insist on taking charge of the finances and withholding the money from the other person. When extremely upset, she may deny her partner the money needed to buy necessities, such as medicine or clothes. This way, she remains in control of her relationship.

Physical abuse is defined as any sort of physical harm or distressed caused to another party. This could occur through pushing, biting, slapping, choking, or throwing objects. Threats of using weapons or driving recklessly can also qualify as physical abuse. While the abuser might not directly hurt his partner, hurting children, trapping you in your home, or even forcing you out of your residence can also fall under this category.

Sexual abuse is often times considered the most heinous type of abuse. The abuser may encourage his partner to dress in a certain way to make him happy. He may manipulate or guilt the other party into trying intimate things that they may not be comfortable with. Even if the couple is married, sexual abuse can occur. Especially if the abuser holds his partner down or forces sexual acts to occur, that can definitely be qualified as sexual abuse.

Domestic violence is a serious offense. No matter the type of abuse that occurs, the effects can be long-lasting and traumatizing. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, it’s important to seek help immediately. For more information on a domestic violence attorney in Irvine, visit this website.
