Weathering the Storm - How to Make Sure Your Roof Is Up For the Challenge
At first glance, you might assume that your roof is sturdy, steady, and ready to take on the storm. Whether it be a rain storm, hail storm, wind storm, lightning storm, or any combination thereof: What might seem like a harmless storm could turn in to a damaging, havoc-wreaking storm if not totally prepared. Take these steps to ensure your roof is ready for the next storm.
Acknowledge Already-Existing Issues / Leaks
Neglecting issues that you might deem “minor” can be one of the biggest mistakes home- and business owners make when it comes to their roofs. Sometimes, a simple leak can be cosmetic and easy to fix, while other times it's a sign of something more serious. If you lack the ability to perform an evaluation on an issue you may have recently noticed, contact someone who can. It's always better to figure out what the issue is, and create a solution, than to wait for it to get bad enough to where you have no other option.
Perform Semi-Annual Roof Checks
Most often, a 30-minute walk-through of your roof can be enough to help you understand whether or not your roof needs attention, or if it will be able to withstand the next storm. A roof is a fairly sturdy structure, and one that won't need too much attention - other than some minor maintenance - if built properly. Now, that's not always the case but, rather, a generalization that should reassure you that more often than not, your roof will be in good condition. But, every now and again, you will notice something not right. When you do, it's probably time to call a roofing specialist. If you're unable to get up on your roof, it's always a good idea to have a roof professional perform a roof checkup for you. Sometimes, roofing professionals will perform these check-ups free of charge, or for a very fair price.
If You're Not Sure - Ask
Most homeowners believe if it's not causing harm, there's no need to fix it. But that's a very harmful assumption. Many major issues with an property owner's roof started as minor, and progressed to something more major. In this case, of course, the extent of the damage would've been a lot less, and therefore easier to manage, had that property owner spent the time and/or money necessary to fix the issue before it became something more. The bottom line: If you're not sure, simply ask an expert - he or she will be able to tell you if it's something you need to worry about or not.
It's safe to assume that every minor issue pertaining to your roof is an issue that should be addressed. Your roof is your safety barrier, and should be treated like a structure that keeps you, your family, your employees, and others safe. But, it can also cause them and your property harm if not maintained properly. Thankfully, roof checks can be performed quite simply, which should mean you have no excuses. Of course, some damage to your roof can come on suddenly - think falling trees or terrible snow storms - but oftentimes, larger issues pertaining to your roof could've been avoided if addressed sooner. So, if you're unsure, ask an expert. And make sure to pay special attention to your roof during the down seasons (Spring and Fall).
