Training Session Tips – How To Handle Difficult Questions?

Aug 27th 2015 at 11:03 PM

Do you have an upcoming training session to deliver? Well, you probably have spent hours preparing for the session, and memorising the content to be delivered. No matter how effectively you’ve delivered the session, the only thing that can change the opinion of your trainees is the way you answer questions. It’s inevitable that questions will start arriving one after another and because you can’t predict all the questions that will be posed, it’s usually more difficult to prepare for that. One wrong answer and your credibility as a trainer may be compromised. Though if handled well, it can also instead, give your reputation a boost.

Some people fear presentation questions, but they should be welcomed to keep your audience interested. We have pulled together some tips from popular and well-versed trainers to help you get over the vertigo of presentation questions.

  1. Ask your audience to hold the questions until the session ends – You want your audience to follow your session in the order like you have planned and constant disruptions will ruin the flow of the presentation, also blur the idea of the presentation. Therefore, it is always a good idea to ask your audience to hold the questions until the end.

  2. Invite questions once you’re done with the session – Just make an announcement to ask questions now. The best way to deal with difficult questions is to welcome them. This not only gives you the confidence, but also shows that you’re well prepared and know the answers of your questions.

  3. Take control – Ask questions instead of letting your audience ask. Ask them if they liked the idea of the session, and did they like the points explained during the presentation. Also ask “do you have any other strong point to add to it?” or “do you agree with the points?” Such phrases and questions give you full control over the session.

  4. While answering a question, take a chance to emphasize your main idea of the topic again – As an example, if your topic includes “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders” and somebody asks “in which country is the maximum growth of the students?” don’t answer directly. Instead use some long phrases to answer the question like “Almost every country is seeing the continuous growth. However, some developed countries have seen massive growth in the past few years”. And along with it, you can mention some examples. So Training Room Rental Singapore Helps to Give better place for Training

  5. Take time to wrap up – Once you’re done with question answers round ask “Anymore questions?” and pause for at least 8 seconds. This may appear a long time but it shows you’re serious and want somebody to fill it. Don’t wrap up immediately after asking the question as it gives an impression of low self-esteem.

Questions and answers are an integral part of any training sessions. It gives you and your audience a chance to grow and refine skills. However, it is important to handle such discussions carefully to avoid hurting your credibility. Keeping these tips into account during your training sessions will enable you to appear more confident and prepared.
