Top Tips for Amateur Wedding Photography

Sep 3rd 2015 at 4:56 AM

If you’re pretty decent at photography, irrespective you’re not a pro, it’s always possible that someone – a family member, a friend, a friend of a friend – will ask you to take snaps at a wedding.

And why wouldn’t you? After all, it’s a great chance to practice your talent, and it’s also an excellent opportunity to showcase your capabilities.

Nevertheless, there’s no getting away from it, being the first or even the second photographer at a wedding is a big responsibility. If you get it wrong, you’re going to have to shoulder the blame, one way or another.

And it’s a fact that none of us are exactly born into wedding photography. It’s not exactly something that tends to come naturally to us. And we never be quite as good as the professional such as the photographer Reston VA.

Wedding photography is, however, a skill that can be learned, just like any other skill. So, with that said, here are a few tips to help you succeed on your big day.

Make it clear from the get-go

Make sure that the ‘potentially’ happy couple are fully aware that you are not a pro photographer, and that your intention is to shoot as a favor rather than to guarantee any results.

Furthermore, if it’s going to take a month or more to deliver your work, do let the couple know well in advance.

Learn as much as you can

Pay attention to how the pros do it. Furthermore, if time and scenario permits, by all means offer to assist someone who is experienced at wedding photography. This will allow you to witness first-hand how it’s done, and yet there’s little to no pressure on you.

Visit a plethora of photography websites and get to grip with other wedding photography tips besides the ones you are reading now. The more confident you are about wedding photography, the better the results will be.

Pre-plan

Wedding photography is nothing at all like street photography, and you can’t merely go with the flow. Pre-planning for the big day will potentially make all the difference. Go to the location in advance and pre-plan for good backgrounds as well as lighting.

Get to grips with the agenda

Find out about the order of play so that you can plan ahead to be in the right place when it’s called for.

Discuss what the couple want

Again, this comes down to pre-planning, whereby you find out what type of images the couple really want, and you also find out about the guests and how they are related.

Do be sure to get many portrait shots of the VIPs as this pursuit generally tends to be a favorite.
