Top Fever Symptoms to Watch for in Your Child

Nov 21st 2015 at 5:04 AM

Fevers in children are usually an indication of an underlying condition. This can be anything from a urinary tract infection to a case of pneumonia. Keeping an eye out for fever symptoms in your child will help you spot an illness more quickly so you can seek advice from your pediatrician without delay.

The first sign that your child may have a fever is a warm forehead. As your child’s temperature rises above normal, he or she may even begin to sweat. Always use a reliable thermometer to confirm the fever, as your pediatrician will ask what the child’s exact temperature is when you call or bring your child in. Also be sure to inform the doctor which method you used to get the thermometer reading. You can take temperatures orally, rectally or under the arm.

A second sign to watch for is head or muscle aches. The rise in temperature can be the culprit, but these signs may also be symptoms of the flu or another illness. If your child is old enough to speak, he or she can relay the discomfort; however, a baby or toddler will convey their pain through fussiness or crying that cannot be consoled.

If your child becomes dehydrated, check to see if a fever is present. This is a third symptom and one that can become very serious. Your child may need intravenous fluids to rehydrate if he or she cannot drink enough liquids. An electrolyte replacement solution is a great choice in addition to water if you can get your little one to drink it.

A fourth indicator that a fever may be present is a loss of appetite. If your child is pushing away more than one meal then get the trusty thermometer out. The fever may be a result of teething, or a sign of sickness coming on.

Finally, if your child shows marks of confusion or has hallucinations, check for a fever right away and then contact your pediatrician. These are serious symptoms of a high that should not be ignored. Seizures may result in a fever that is too high, especially in children with other health conditions.

Fevers occur when your child’s body is fighting off an infection or illness. It is important to identify the fever and then seek treatment from your child’s doctor so that your little one can recover as quickly as possible.
