Tips for Removing Common Carpet Stains
Stains are a fact of life when you have carpet. While every home and office should have a professional carpet clean on at least an annual basis, calling in experts such as those from services for professional carpet cleaning in Irvine, in between it’s important to know how to remove stains for yourself.
Here are some quick tips for effectively treating some of the most common carpet stains:
Coffee. Coffee spills are very common. Use a clean towel to absorb all moisture possible, and blot it gently (don’t scrub at stains, it will only spread them). Mix some dish detergent into a cup of warm water and apply this to the stain with a sponge. Blot with a clean towel. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts warm water and apply to the stain, again with a sponge. Blot with a clean towel. Repeat this process with clean, plain water. Let it dry naturally.
Pet Accidents. Grrr. Pet owners will know only too well how annoying this can be. As soon as the stain is located, use a towel to soak up all excess moisture. Then use a cup of water with dish detergent (made sudsy), poured onto the stain, and repeat the process. Rinse then with a mixture of a quart of warm water and a half cup of white vinegar. Blot with a clean towel to absorb moisture. Allow it to dry naturally.
Vomit. This will come in handy if you have children. Lift and remove as much as possible without pushing more into the carpet. Pour cold water or club soda onto the stain and allow it to stand for a minute. Blot with a clean and dry cloth to absorb as much as possible. Treat the remaining stain with a carpet stain remover that contains enzymes (such as those made for pet stains).
Blood. Apply either club soda or fresh cold water to the bloodstain, and blot it with a clean cloth. Don’t scrub at it. Repeat this process until the stain has lifted.
Wine. White Wine: blot with a dry clean cloth. Use a solution of wool detergent with white vinegar (one teaspoon of each) into a quart of warm water. Dab and blot the stain by working inwards. Absorb moisture with a dry towel and repeat the process until the stain has gone.
Red Wine: Cover the entire spill immediately with salt, bicarbonate of soda, or talcum powder. Leave overnight. Vacuum away the powder. Soak a soft cloth in warm water and blot inwards without rubbing. Use a dry towel to absorb moisture. Use a solution of dye stripper (one part to fifty parts cold water) to blot the stain; remove moisture again and rinse with tepid water and a clean white cloth. Call a professional if this doesn’t work.
Don’t forget, every home (and office space) requires annual professional carpet cleaning. Experts like those at carpet cleaning Irvine services can get your carpets cleaner and fresher than you ever could on your own, with their industrial strength equipment and expertise.
