Three Things That Indicate You May Have a Slab Leak

Dec 12th 2015 at 3:55 AM

A slab leak occurs underneath the foundation of your home, which means it is not always immediately obvious until you hire a plumber to diagnose the problem. Fortunately, though, there are several signs that may reveal you’re dealing with a slab leak.

In some areas of the home, wet areas can be a common sight, especially in places that have sinks, such as bathrooms and kitchens. However, if you keep seeing reoccurring water spots on your flooring despite diligent efforts to mop the surface regularly, that’s a telltale sign a slab leak is to blame.

That’s because a slab leak originates from your foundation, causing water to move from the ground upwards. If you want to investigate further, reach down to touch the surface of one of the water spots. If it feels warm, the hot temperature almost a sure sign a slab leak is causing the issue. That’s because slab leaks often happen in association with hot water lines.

Maybe your household is very environmentally conscious, so your water bill is perpetually low year round. Or, perhaps you are just very aware of how much water you tend to use, and what the monthly charge should be. In either case, consider it a red flag if your water bills have spiked in recent months and you know you’ve not been intentionally using more fluid than usual.

Keep in mind other kinds of leaks may cause your water costs to go up, so this sign alone is not specifically indicative of a slab leak. That’s why it’s smart to call a plumber as soon as possible so the professional can look into the problem more thoroughly and determine the cause. During your plumbing appointment, you can also ask for advice about how to keep your water bills as low as possible.

The sound of rushing water may be soothing if you’re standing near a woodland stream, but not if you’re merely in your home watching TV or cooking dinner and can’t help but notice the sound of water beneath you. A plumber will find the source and cause of your leak, allowing you to feel at peace in your home once again. The sooner you call for assistance, the more likely it is you can expect minimal damage.

Although these are some of the most common signs of a slab leak, only a plumber can diagnose one with authority. For more information about identifying a slab leak in Carlsbad, click here.
