The Most Common Causes Of Clogged Drains

Jul 21st 2015 at 2:12 AM

Toilets and sinks are built to stand up to real life, but there’s a fine line between standard wear-and-tear and abnormal use. Find out what bad habits are causing your drains to clog.

Indoor plumbing is an amazing innovation. Fresh water is piped in to your home and waste is flushed away with controls simple enough that they’re easily understood even by small children. As you can imagine, though, it gets much more complicated beneath the surface. Drain pipes can become clogged by oversized objects as well as gunk and build-up which occur over time. What are the top threats to your drains? You might be surprised by some of the culprits.

In the kitchen, one of the foremost causes of underperforming drain pipes is the accumulation of grease and fat. After cooking fatty meats such as bacon, it’s important that you do not simply pour the remaining material from the pan down your sink drain. Just as it would in your refrigerator, grease will coagulate as it cools, hardening and adhering to surfaces. It’s not difficult to guess how this creates problems in your pipes, especially when chunks of food sent through your garbage disposal become part of the mix.

The best way dispose of greases and oils is by throwing them out with your regular trash. Grease can be poured into a foil-lined cup or bowl and allowed to harden (place it in the fridge if necessary) before pitching it with the rest of your garbage. Oils and substances that don’t coagulate can first be poured into a sealable bottle or container to avoid the mess and then thrown out as normal.

When it comes to your bathroom, there’s a whole different long-term issue that threatens to choke off your piping: hair. The problem is even more prevalent when there is long hair washing down the drain, twisting and clumping into drain-stopping masses. An ideal way to stem the issue is to install traps over your drains which won’t allow hair or other solid objects to pass through.

Last but not least, there is the drain which for many people always seems to be the first one clogged: the toilet. The majority of plumbing systems are built to handle waste, standard toilet paper and not much else. Paper towels, diapers and feminine products are all common culprits of backed-up toilets. For those with young children, you’ll also want to watch out for foreign objects trying to sneak down the drain such as action figures, or your car keys.

Of course, even the most diligent homeowners are bound to run into plumbing problems at one time or another. When proactive measures aren’t cutting it, don’t hesitate to call in a trained professional to restore order.
