The Impact of Technology In the Roofing Industry
Lansing, Michigan - Technology is everywhere. It has not only affected, but literally transformed, every aspect of the global economy - from business and leisure, to trade, construction and every other industry and sub-industry that exists today. Soon, every fast food worker will be replaced by kiosks, robots will once and for all replace factory workers, and this trend will only continue to grow. Last year, we talked about the impact of technology on the roofing industry. Since then, many new efforts have stemmed from even newer technologies, which has further enhanced the industry and made the lives of roofers, and their customers, better. So now, one year later, let’s take a look at what’s changed.
Real-Time Communication : Everybody has a smart phone. Even my 88 year old grandpa has a smart phone. Which is ironic, because he was himself a roofer before he retired almost 20 years ago? Of course, he didn’t have a smart phone back then - no one did. But now that smart phones are so prominent and popular amongst consumers, it’s opened up a whole new line of communication for roofers, just as it has for everyone else.
When fixing an existing roof, or building a new one, communication between project managers, site managers, and their workers is extremely important. These days, there’s no better way to do that than to communicate via text, email or instant messaging - using apps like Gmail and WhatsApp among others. Real-time communication is key to keeping projects moving forward quickly.
Digital Contracts : Contracts are a fundamental piece of the roofing industry. New customers are often bound to a contract between the roofing contractors and themselves, and perhaps there’s no more effective way to send, sign and receive contracts then via the digital universe. These days, when a contract needs to be drafted, roofing experts can do so quickly via their desktops or tablets, and quickly send them off to the client once complete. In turn, clients can easily review and sign said contracts with a few clicks. Thus, making the process simpler for both parties - saving time and money.
Apps, Apps, Apps! : Many roofing companies have chosen to build apps - in addition to their websites - for their businesses. By doing so, roofers can interact with their customers more intently, garnering important feedback, allowing customers to communicate directly with roofing professionals on questions, and even gamifying the roofing experience by letting customers swap out digital roofs on a photo of their home to show them what the finished product is going to look like. All of these things are not just important for roofing companies, but can help them thrive in a world where consumers want more interactions with businesses, and simplified communication channels - all of which can be achieved via technology.
Social Media : Perhaps nothing has been more effective for the roofing industry in terms of connecting with new and potential customers than social media. Roofing companies who’ve learned how to utilize social media in its various forms are oftentimes more successful than their non-social-adopting counterparts. Not because social media is some magic bullet, but because it’s a platform where businesses and contractors can reach out to their customers, settle disputes, and engage with their fans and followers in all new and inviting ways. If you haven’t gotten on the social media bandwagon, today’s the day to start.
