The Easiest Landscaping Project You Can Do By Yourself

Jul 20th 2015 at 2:21 AM

While your home may be beautiful, the landscaping around it can greatly affect people’s first impressions. The state of the plants and lawn surrounding your home make a great difference in how your home is perceived, and it can greatly affect the overall value. While it might feel like a daunting task, it is easier than you may think. It might be tempting to hire a landscaper, but there are many projects that can make a major difference without the extensive cost of a professional. One of the easiest things you can do to create an important first impression is adding a stone walkway.

Building a walkway is an inexpensive and easy project that helps add elegance to the exterior of your home. To get started you will need a short list of materials including stone, water, pre-mix cement mortar, crusher run gravel, and ¾ inch gravel. In addition, you will need to make sure you have several tools available including a mixing bucket, chipping hammer, calculator, shovel, hand tamper, rubber mallet, level, tape measurer, protective eyeglasses, garden hose, rake and trowel.

First, you will want to select the type of stone that fits your home. There is a range of stones that can be used in making your path, and you want to choose something that compliments the architectural style of your house. You also want to consider some practical concerns like the purpose of the path and the climate of your city. If your path is more decorative, then you can choose a smaller or less level stone, but if you plan on people walking over it frequently, you want a more even material that can withstand repeated use. You will also want to measure the space, so you can order the correct amount of material.

Once you have selected the appropriate stone and gathered the additional materials, you are ready to get started. First, you will lay out the stones in the pattern that you find most appropriate. You want to create a pattern that is appealing but also functional, so make sure there is adequate spacing between the stones. You will then use the trowel to clear the spacing under and around the stones and keep any remaining sod for later use. You will then use the mallet to push the stones into the gravel and soil. You will want to ensure that the stones are stable. If you choose, you can add a cobblestone border for more interest. This can be particularly beneficial if the path runs through a flowerbed. If you do this, you will want to secure the border with mortar. You then will fill in space with the gravel and replant any grass or plants around the stones.

Your finished path will truly add a unique touch to your home. To get started, you can find landscape products in San Jose by visiting this website.
