The Dreaded Roach—What You Need to Know

Jun 24th 2015 at 12:05 AM

There are many different pests that can infest the home, but cockroaches are often viewed as one of the grossest and most annoying vermin. If you are having a problem with finding these insects inside your house, you need to understand certain traits about them in order to find a solution. Although most species live outside, American and German roaches will often adapt to human environments. They find their way inside your home in search of food, water, and shelter. In order to get rid of them, it is important to understand what type of roach you have, how they survive, and in what ways you can control them.

Although all cockroaches can be difficult to eliminate, the smaller ones may prove to be an even greater challenge. These kinds of vermin, which include the German and brown-banded cockroaches, will live and breed inside. German cockroaches are tan with two black stripes behind the head and have wings, even though they do not fly. They are usually about 1/2 to 5/8 inches long and are most commonly found around drains, sinks, cabinets, or behind stoves and refrigerators. They may also be found in places where sanitation is poor.

Brown-banded cockroaches, the less common breed of these small pests, have two brownish-yellow bands across their backs and are about 5/8 inches long. The males also have wings and are known to fly in warm environments. Brown-banded roaches can be found anywhere inside but are commonly found near the ceiling or around cabinets.

Although large roaches are normally found outside, they can live indoors as well. Types of these pests include the American, smoky brown, and oriental cockroaches. All of these kinds prefer dark, moist locations and therefore are commonly found in basements, crawl spaces, or gutters.

Although insecticides can help control your roach problem, there are other steps you can take to help you eliminate and prevent these pests. The main thing you need to do is restrict access to food, water, and shelter in and around your home. This should include cleaning floors often to remove crumbs and spills, eliminating clutter and messes, keeping garbage and food in tight containers, and being careful to close any means of entry for the roach.

Cockroach infestations can be a hassle to get rid of, but by learning more about these insects, you can help prevent or eliminate pest problems. The most important way to reduce the risk of issues is by keeping good sanitation both inside and outside the home. To find out more about cockroach control in El Cajon, visit this website.
