The Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage

Mar 20th 2015 at 11:41 PM

You appreciate the antique furniture from grandma, you really do. But, it just doesn’t fit in with your modern décor. You don’t want to get rid of it, since it has sentimental and maybe financial value.  The garage is already full of bikes, paint cans and tools. The attic is full of boxes. Where can you possibly put it? A climate controlled storage unit can hold your valuables while protecting them from weather damage.

A climatized space can keep your items as safe as they would be in your own home. Climate control means the temperature in the units is generally kept between 65 and 85 degrees, although you will want to verify the numbers with the facility you choose.

Is a constant temperature really important? If you are planning on storing effects for longer than one year, or if they are sensitive to humidity, it can make a real difference. When conditions fluctuate greatly, going from freezing to sweltering, many possessions may be damaged. Wood furniture and musical instruments, for example, can crack when they are regularly exposed to hot and cold.

Another advantage of a heat controlled room is its protection against rodents.  A standard shed may seem locked up tight, but a mouse can fit through a crevice as small as one-quarter inch wide. Climatized units are generally inside a finished building, making it much harder for rodents to access. Also, they are usually built above flood level, so your valuables are less likely to be damaged by heavy rains.

Items like art, documents, film, photographs and electronics usually fare much better in a climate controlled room.

To further preserve your goods, make sure they are dry when you put them into storage. That way both they and the room will stay dryer, important because any kind of moisture allows mold to grow. The building system should control the humidity, but you can help keep air circulating by using pallets.

If you are storing a lot of boxes, make sure you label them clearly. While you may think you will remember where you put everything, you’ll likely forget. If you have labels, you’ll be able to quickly find that candy dish from Aunt Louise. Items you think you will want to retrieve more often can be placed near the front.

Even if you’ve run out of room in your own home, you can still keep your favorite things. Look after them as if they were with you by using a climate controlled storage unit. The even temperatures and secured housing can keep your possessions from harm.
