The Adult Diaper as a Fashion Accessory
Whomever would have thought that an adult diaper could be described as a fashion accessory? After all, to date, adult diapers have been something of an embarrassment. They’ve been considered more as a health accessory than a fashion accessory.
Nevertheless, times are a-changing, and the world of the adult diaper is now something to be celebrated, rather than be embarrassed about.
Adult Diapers in Japan
The marketplace in Japan for adult diapers has never been more buoyant. In September, 2008, the first all-diaper fashion show was held by Japanese manufacturers of adult diapers.
On something of a slightly different note, in May, 2010, the adult diaper market in Japan ventured in a direction that was totally unexpected. And if you’d never considered used diapers to be reusable, think again.
Instead of ditching used diapers, they can, instead, be utilized as an alternative source of fuel!
Used diapers are shred, dried, and then sterilized, after which, they are turned into pellets of fuel for boilers. Apparently, these fuel pellets contain around 5,000 kcal of heat per kg.
And turning our attention back to Japanese fashion, in September, 2012, the weekly Japanese magazine SPA! published an editorial about the trend of diaper-wearing among Japanese ladies. The magazine reported that many Japanese women choose to wear adult diapers given that they save a lot of time over going to the washroom every few hours.
More recently, the Depend Adult Diapers brand crafted a marketing campaign named "Underwearness."
In order to achieve as much publicity as possible, the company created a series of ads, then held a launch party in NYC which featured a fashion show together with a concert. A large percentage of the proceeds went to charities Simon Foundation for Continence and United Way.
Adult Diapers for Improved Health
And further to the cause is the preference for adult diaper wearing over visiting the toilet. Dr. Dipak Chatterjee who writes for the Mumbai newspaper Daily News and Analysis, claimed that public toileting facilities are thoroughly unhygienic, and thus, it’s safer for people in general, but particularly for women – who are more vulnerable to infections – to opt for wearing diapers instead.
Next up, we have Seann Odoms of the popular Men’s Health magazine who believes that the wearing of adult diapers can help people to maintain a healthier bowel function than otherwise. He stated that diapers are not only more practical, but also a far healthier form of underwear.
Famed author Paul Davidson makes the argument that adult diapers should be socially acceptable for anyone to wear since they provide a level of freedom and remove the unnecessary trouble of going to the toilet.
