SWPPP for Better Pollution Prevention

May 18th 2015 at 5:39 AM

All industrial sites are unique, but all of them can have effects on stormwater, which needs to be controlled. Stormwater runoff is a problem in areas with construction activities because it can directly drain pollutants such as oil, grease and sediments, chemicals and gases such as nitrogen and phosphorus among others directly into the water bodies. And since storm drain systems do not provide a treatment for this kind of contamination, it can result in a variety of problems. Most important of these includes the problem of untreated water discharged into water bodies that are used for fishing, drinking water and swimming, affecting the lives of millions of people. That’s the reason why companies need for stormwater pollution prevention plan or SWPPP. It is basically a industry’s customized plan, which is developed to treat stormwater pollution by designing a prevention team, has site description as the part of plan, summarizes any kind of potential pollutant sources, describes their control measures, develops schedules and procedures of handling everything, has documentation to support eligibility and receives certifications for SWPPP from EPA or the United States Environmental Protection Strategy. Under this entire procedure, industries have to complete documentation to become eligible for their activities under other federal laws, have to file a notice of intent and implement all the stormwater control measures that are outlined in their SWPPP.

SWPPP is basically designed for better pollution control. It is well known that discharging any kind of waters through stormwater runoff can result in a number of contaminants polluting water bodies, which can led to environmental deterioration and have harmful effect of aquatic fishes or cause spread of germs and diseases among humans. That’s why stormwater pollution prevention plan is basically designed to be a customized plan for companies that need a stormwater permit. Permit eligibility is limited to discharges from facilities in sectors such as timber products, paper products, glass, clay and cement, water transportation, ship and boat building, mineral mining, oil and gas, coal mines, metal mining, asphalt and roofing, scrap recycling, steam electric facilities, hazardous waste, landfills, auto salvage yards, air transportation, treatment works, food products, furniture and fixtures, printing, publishing, transportation equipment, electronic and photo goods among others. These companies develop a written document that identifies the sources of pollution and industrial activities that are conducted at the site and creates control practices that will be used by the operator and the industry in general to prevent the pollutants from making their way into the stormwater runoff.

Since pollution is a rampant issue, companies will need to apply for their stormwater pollution prevention plan before they apply for their permit coverage. Therefore, it is recommended that companies hire consultants and a professional engineering company that can develop their SWPPP in an environmental law compliance manner. This ensures that the application and the plan are available to the EPA whenever requested for review during an inspection. Ensure that you choose a company that has professional engineers and displays adequate knowledge of the laws to prepare a plan and strategy that works effectively.
