Steel Frame Structures
Most steel construction is done with a type of steel called mild steel. Mild steel is a material that is very strong. Take a circular bar of steel 1 inch / 25mm in diameter. If you were to securely attach a circular bar of steel 1 inch in diameter to a ceiling, you could hang 20 tons from it.
This strength has a great advantage to buildings. The other important feature of steel framing is its flexibility. It can bend without cracking which allows a steel building to flex when it is pushed to one side by wind, or an earthquake. Additionally when steel is subjected to great force, it will not spontaneously crack like glass, but slowly bend out of shape. This allows steel buildings to bend giving warning to inhabitants to escape. Failure in steel frames is not sudden and a steel structure rarely collapses. Steel in most cases performs far better in earthquakes than most other materials because of its properties.
This low weight of steel frame buildings means they have to be firmly bolted to the foundations to resist wind forces; otherwise they could be blown away.
Steel structures have many advantages:
- They are quick to build at site, because a lot of work can be pre-fabbed at a factory.
- They are flexible, which makes them very good at resisting changing forces like wind or earthquake.
- A wide range of ready-made structural sections are available.
- They can be made to take any kind of shape, and clad with any type of material
- A wide range of joining methods is available, such as bolting, welding, and riveting
Most, but not all steel building kit packages are designed for the "do-it-yourself" market, so you shouldn't have too much difficultly even if you are a complete novice. However, if you are planning on a building that is very wide or very tall building or if you have an unusual configuration, you may have some challenges in erecting the building yourself.
You should ask the company Rep very detailed questions on how their particular building goes up to check if any procedures are going to be a problem for you.
