Selection Criteria For Pipe Fitting

Jun 30th 2014 at 3:47 AM

Pipe fitting refers to the process of repairing or installing tubing or piping systems to convey gas, liquid or certain solid materials. Different types of materials are used to manufacture pipe fitting equipments and components, including plastic, aluminum, iron, copper and steel. While selecting the pipe fitting, you need to keep certain things in mind, such as their purpose, type, and other factors. Let us talk about them and help you find the right pipe fitting.

Purpose of pipe fitting.

Pipe fitting can be used for fulfilling any of the below mentioned purposes:

To connect bores of two or more tubes or pipes
To connect sections of pipes
To connect a pipe to some other apparatus
To change the direction of a liquid or gas flow
To maintain or regulate the flow
To close and seal a pipe

Types of pipe fittings

Depending on the purpose, fittings can be categorized as follows:

Fittings to terminate or extend a pipe run, such as couplings, unions, caps, plugs pipe, adapters etc.
Fittings to change direction of a pipe, such as elbows
Fittings to connect pipes, such as Tees, side-inlet elbows, cross, wyes etc.
Fittings to change size of a pipe, such as a reducer, coupling or bushing
Fittings to regular or manage flow, such as valves
Pipe fitting tool, such as a pipe fastener

Selecting the right pipe fittings

There are several factors that you have to keep in mind while selecting pipe fittings for your purpose:

Type of connection: There can be two different types of connectors in a pipe fitting. One end may be male threaded while other may be female threaded. Plastic fittings have male slip on one end and female threaded on the other. Some fittings may also have matching ends to accommodate any kind of requirement.

Construction material: As a general rule, pipe fittings should be of the same material as of the pipe used. However, in certain cases, materials hat conform to certain standards or codes can also be used to fit pipes of other materials.

Flow: To maintain a consistent flow, pipe fitting should be slightly bigger than the remaining part of the pipe, so that it can accommodate any connections without making the pipe’s inner diameter narrower.

Fitting type: In addition to the material of pipe, the pipe fittings are also identified by their type, such as male or female, or slip or threaded.

Size: While measuring the pipe fittings size, note that male threaded ones are measured from their outer edge, while female ones are measured from the inside.

Thickness: Just like pipes, pipe fittings are also available in different ‘schedules’ or thicknesses.

Design: Each pipe is designed specifically to carry particular fluids, gases, liquids and chemicals. The same rule applies to pipe fittings too.

All these factors will help you find the right pipe fitting as per your requirements.
