Recycling Makes Good Business Sense

Mar 30th 2015 at 4:54 AM

If you live in the U.S. you likely produce a lot of trash, quite literally. The average person generates over four pounds of it each day, in the form of fast food containersr, drinking cups, furniture and grass clippings, to name a few. The workplace may see the largest volume of trash production, particularly inpaper products.

It is estimated that a person uses an entire ream of paper every two-and-a-half weeks. On the other hand, if 20 or so employees recycle their combined one ton of paper, they will be saving 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water and 380 gallons of oil.In terms of real use, it would save enough energy to power an average American home for six months.

The bottom line: garbage is costing not only your company, but the environment as well. You can start reducing your lossesby implementing a recycling program not only for paper, but also for aluminum cans, and plastic and glass bottles. When you begin to recycle you’ll be putting a lot less in the dumpster, which means the trash collector won’t need to visit as often.

However, your efforts are only effective if employees are willing to participate in the program. People are often resistant to change, but it can be simple. Reduce frustration by having collection boxes readily available and clearly labeled. Put a can for plastics and aluminum in the lunch room where employees are likely to have drinks. Have a receptacle for paper near the copy machine as well as centrally placed ones near desks.

To keep employees interested, track their efforts so they can see they are making a difference. You can even use incentive programs to recognize and reward departments that are putting in a superior effort, whilesimultaneously encouraging everyone to get on the bandwagon. Ask for feedback so you will know what is working and what needs to be changed to make the system work best.

You will not only be helping your business become more environmentally conscious, but you can help boost your corporate image as well. Many communities have programs to recognize businesses that are making efforts to lessen their carbon footprint. Besides helping your company, you may also be helping the economy. The U.S. EPA estimates that five times as many jobs are created through recycling as opposed to using a landfill.

You can help your business, the environment and your community when you choose to have your company recycle. To learn more about recycling plastic in San Jose, please visit this website.
