Reasons To Go to an Urgent Care Rather Than a Hospital

Dec 18th 2015 at 11:52 PM

Urgent care facilities are popping up all over the place. They are like a cross between a doctor’s office and an emergency room. You can get care for a variety of medical issues. Many people do not understand why they should go to an urgent care rather than the emergency room, though. The fact is that urgent care facilities offer many benefits over the hospital.

Urgent care is usually more convenient than going to the hospital. Like an emergency room, most urgent care facilities are open around the clock. They are also located in convenient areas with some cities having multiple urgent care facilities. They aren’t usually as busy as an ER, so you will likely not have to wait as long. Urgent cares don’t cover serious medical emergencies, so there is not the chance of having to wait on someone who comes in by ambulance.  Like an ER, urgent care doesn’t take appointments, but this isn’t usually a huge issue, especially if you go at non-peak times. Even if you do go at a peak time when the facility is busy, you will still not have any longer of a wait than you do at the doctor’s office.

Urgent care is also less expensive than an ER visit. The cost of a visit to the ER is notorious for being expensive. Urgent care costs much less. You are getting the exact same treatment you would receive, but because urgent care facilities have much less overhead than the ER, you will charged much less for the services your receive. You can be seen and treated for almost any problem, from a sinus infection to a minor broken bone.

Care from an urgent care facility is just as effective as the care you get from the ER. The workers at urgent care are licensed doctors and nurses. They have all the same training and use equipment that is the same as at the ER. The only difference here is that urgent care doesn’t handle situations that require immediate and life-threatening medical attention, like injuries requiring surgery or intensive care.

Going to an urgent care instead of an ER is a great choice to make if you need medical attention and the issue isn’t life-threatening. You will get faster and cheaper service that is comparable to what you would get at the ER. To learn more about emergency urgent care in San Diego, click here.
