Nissan selected to produce the next New York City taxicab

May 4th 2011 at 6:28 AM

Nissan of Japan is a reputable name in the world of automobiles. So much so, in fact, the company has been awarded an exclusive 10-year contract to make cabs to be sold to city hacks and fleet owners.

According to The New York Daily News, the Japanese auto maker scored the highest in its bid to service New York City last week, and the selection has been officially announced this morning.

The new cabs on the streets of New York are being hailed as roomier, and more durable. Both factors are important for the hard-driving conditions of a city cab. Nissan engineers designed a machine good enough to not only beat out Turkish car maker Kazan, but also Ford Motors, Inc., which is no small feat, in itself.

Visitors and residents of New York City might not want to hold their breath for the "Taxi of Tomorrow" just yet, though. Although the selection has been officially announced by Mayor Bloomberg, there's still a lengthy contractual process between Nissan and city administrators.
