Mario Lanza 1921-1959

Alfredo Arnold Cocozza came into the world in 1921, the very same same year that Enrico Caruso sadly left this world. Alfredo or "Freddy" as he was known to his family, grew up to become one of the most influential Tenors of the modern era. We would know him better as "Mario Lanza", a reworked version of his mothers maiden name "Maria Lanza". It is without a doubt that Mario Lanza inspired future generations of tenors, such as Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carerras just to name two. Lanza did not do an awful lot on the operatic stage, although his renditions of some of the famous arias are truly stunning and once heard never to be forgotten. His meteoric rise to fame as a matinee idol really stamped his identity on the whole world. Even after over 50 years since his early and sad demise, the world still revels in that golden tenor voice. And new generations of Mario Lanza fans are born across the globe, his emotionally charged and electric performances live with you forever. How could we forget his performance of "Vesti le Giubba" and that simple Italian song that he turned into an aria... "Core n Grato". Whatever Mario Lanza sang he made his own, that glorious and powerful voice ringing out to a captive audience. He truly held them in his hand and commanded 100 % attention. Yet was there some deeply entrenched and destructive trait in his character makeup, who can tell and it is said what life gives you with one hand something is taken away with the other. Let us just be truly grateful that he lived and gave us all so much pleasure, the world will never forget him that is for sure. Join me in a celebration of his voice and music, i know you will be glad you did. Steve Thorn (Tenor Voice)
