Importance of Nutritious Food for Different Age Groups of Family
Our family's health is our main concern. We always try hard to give them the best no matter whether it is food or clothing. We all cannot deny the fact that healthy and nutritious food is important for every living body. And it is no surprise that different age groups of people in our family need different type or food as they have varied nutritious requirement.
For instance pregnant women need more body-building foods such as milk, eggs, dried beans, dried fish, and nuts; regulating foods such as green, leafy and yellow vegetables; and foods rich in vitamin C such as papaya and guava; and energy food. Expectant mothers need these additional nutrients to meet their needs as well as of their growing fetus. Lactating mothers need the same nutrients but in even greater amounts.
The sick members of the family require the same type of food needed by the normally healthy. Their food should be modified however to make these easier to digest and to suit their nutritional needs. For example, the sick may need low-salt or low-fat diets.
The elderly (60 and above) need foods like fish, meat, poultry, eggs, and milk to keep their bodies fit and strong. Fish and meat dishes are better baked, boiled, or broiled rather than fried because frying adds to the fat content of the food. Unregulated intake of fats among the elderly increases the risks of cholesterol build-up and cardiovascular complications. Older people also need energy foods (rice, root crops, sugar). Regulating foods such as green, leafy and yellow vegetables protect the elderly from colds, illnesses, and eye problems. Fruits rich in vitamin C strengthen the gums and help the elderly resist infections. One can also check for the Manitoba made food products that are healthy and nutritious for the whole family.
A family of four sharing a bowl of rice and a whole fish will have more to eat than a family of seven sharing the same amount of food. Each member in the family of seven will get lesser nutrients from the meal than each members of the family of four. Such a situation will not be a problem if the servings can adequately meet the nutrients needs of the family of seven. But in many Filipino homes, the meal being served is prepared from a meager food budget.
The more family members there are to share a meal, the lesser servings there will be per family member. As a result, pre-schoolers may not have enough nutrients for their proper physical and mental development and for protection from illnesses. The school children may not have sufficient energy for play and work. The adolescents may not have adequate amounts of body building, energy, and regulating foods to cope with their accelerated physical growth as well as physiological and emotional changes. The special dietary needs of the elderly (low-salt, low-fat) may not be satisfied because there is not enough to prepare. Such conditions of inadequacy may lead to illnesses and under nutrition in the family.
