How To Save Space And Reduce Apartment Clutter

Jun 19th 2015 at 12:24 AM

Save space and reduce apartment clutter by making sure all furniture serves at least one purpose, by taking regular inventory of possessions, and by displaying prize objects instead of keeping all of them visible.

It can be difficult to keep an apartment clutter-free and to use your small space in the most functional way. However, there are certain tricks and strategies you can employ to keep your apartment looking its best. Whichever methods you choose will be based upon your own personal preferences and the type of apartment you live in.

There are several things you can do to reduce clutter in your home. First, you’ll want to take regular inventory of your possessions, from clothes to books to paperwork, and see what you can get rid of. For clothes, the general rule is that if you haven’t worn a particular item of clothing in the past year, chances are you will never wear it again. If you have only a small space to showcase your books but have some sort of storage area, a great way to enjoy what you have is to fill a small bookcase and rotate your books every now and then, replacing the ones on the shelves with ones in storage. Only do this if you have a nice way to store them that doesn’t involve an actual storage unit, or else you’ll be spending money unnecessarily.

Paper tends to accumulate no matter how much we try to keep on top of it. To lessen paperwork, you can switch to online statements and correspondence. If you prefer paper statements, only keep the most recent statement, unless you need them for taxes. It is also a good idea to have some sort of paper sorting system. For instance, have a place for mail in a visible location that you can’t ignore, and preferably one with slots so that you can sort the mail and be forced to go through it periodically, as the slots will get full. You’ll also want to go through your files at least once a year to see what can be thrown out.

To save space, make sure all furniture serves a purpose, and multi-purpose furniture is even better. You can get a small table that folds out into a bigger one, a bed that comes with built in storage underneath, or a bedside table with enough drawers to store things out of sight. Choose real-wood furniture or furniture that resembles wood, as it naturally looks less cluttered than anything made out of plastic. Plastic drawers especially can look messy, as all items in the drawers are visible through the plastic.

Keeping an apartment clutter free and employing space-saving options can be difficult, but taking the extra time to do these things will help you enjoy your apartment.
