How to Prepare Your Electronics for Self-Storage

Jun 18th 2015 at 11:15 PM

Clothes fit nicely into boxes and suitcases, but electronics present more of a puzzle when it comes to prepping them for storage. Are you supposed to remove batteries? What do you do with the cables? For important gadgets that are going into self-storage, taking proper precautions is important to ensure that their functionality is preserved and any damage prevented. Steps like removing power adapters, backing up data and adding layers of protective padding all help avoid unnecessary damage.

For computers and other devices with multiple cords and attachments, remove all wiring prior to storage. Put power adapters and other cords into plastic bags and label them accordingly. Removing cords helps prevent and tangling and creates a safer environment in your unit by removing tripping hazards. Since loose bags of cords can be difficult to find, keep all cords in one box so you can easily locate them when you’re ready to retrieve your belongings.

While it may be tempting to tightly wrap up gadgets in plastic to prevent dust residue or scratching, this actually can be harmful. Plastic traps moisture and can damage vital components during storage periods. To keep the dirt away, try using packing blankets or sheets to wrap your electronics. Towels are another great tool for keeping devices clean and adding an extra layer of padding. To prevent screens and monitors from cracking, add foam padding or plastic bubble wrap.

If you are concerned about moisture accumulating in your storage unit, silica gel can be added to boxes containing electronics. Silica gel is a dehumidifying agent that helps absorb moisture and prevent the damage of device components. While many storage units are climate-controlled, this step serves to provide an additional protective barrier. Wood pieces can also be used to create space between the floor of your unit and valuable electronics. Placing wooden pallets or boards between your boxes and the floor helps prevent scratching or moisture damage.

When storing computers, be sure to do a complete data backup to your external hard drive or digital storage source. Remove all plug-ins, including CDs, DVDs and USB devices. Once data has been backed up and the attachments unplugged, batteries should be removed from any device with a rechargeable component. Batteries can leak and cause corrosion when stored, so they should always be removed prior to any period of storage.

By taking precautions to prepare your electronics for storage, you can ensure the protection of your data and devices. Simple steps like removing batteries, wrapping cords and backing data all help preserve the condition of your gadgets. To learn more self-storage in Salinas, please visit this website.
