How to Ensure Cheap Car and Van Insurance

May 21st 2015 at 6:14 AM

Following the EU Gender Directive of December 2012 it became illegal for insurers make a distinction between men and women when providing car insurance quotes.

It has been calculated that this led to a rise in car insurance premiums for women of up to 30%.

This is despite the fact that women are statistically much less likely to be involved in accidents and, if they are, the damage to their cars is likely to be much less severe. However, insurers are still able to consider factors such as age and occupation when quoting for car and van insurance, and of course there are the no claims discounts, all of which mean that careful drivers can still take advantage of cheap car or van insurance.

Generally, the younger a driver is, the more expensive their car insurance is likely to be.

There are some ways that all age groups can help to bring their insurance costs as low as possible, however.

The factors that the insurers will consider include the age, engine capacity and make of the car, so the newer, lower powered engines in a small car will command cheaper insurance premiums than the large, high-performance vehicle that is also more costly to repair.

Cars made by the more expensive manufacturers, even those with fairly small engines, will generally be a little more expensive to insure.

Mileage also plays a part in how expensive or cheap insurance is, and this is likely to be important to anyone who’s vehicle, either car or van, is primarily used for work that requires them to visit clients and customers.

With business or commercial van insurance varies with the type of vehicle, its use and how many people are likely to be driving a given vehicle.

It is important to be clear what a van is to be used for when choosing insurance.

Is it for carriage of own goods which means that your company will be using the commercial van to carry goods you own or other people’s goods in your area of business such as construction equipment or cleaning supplies?

The van may also be used for personal use which could be to take a trip to the recycling tip over a weekend.

Haulage involves carrying materials or goods for someone who will be paying you for that specific service. Courier van services require this type of protection and it is likely to be more expensive. It pays to compare quotes on a comparison site so you can ensure you get the best value deal.

Other factors to consider are size and weight of the Van Insurance, repair costs and what security measures it has.

The cheapest van insurance is personal use only, but the restrictions on what is covered are greater so it would be unwise to use the van for work with this type of cover.
