How Effective Car Paint Matching Is Mastered

Dec 25th 2015 at 12:51 AM

Even those who have been in the auto body repair industry for a long time know that seamless car paint matching is a challenge that most shops have not mastered. Customers who bring in their vehicles for restoration often get great results in the form of a shiny, gorgeous new coat of paint that is a close match to the original color, but exactness proves fleeting. The issue is that there is an unlimited number of variants in the shading; however subtle, each batch has its own unique shade – and different manufacturers tend to produce varying tones when seeking to produce the same color paint. While this inherent and seemingly unavoidable inconsistency is not a grand concern when painting the entire body of a vehicle, it can be a major consideration when only one or two spots on the car are being painted; with ineffective matching, the area that underwent repair quickly becomes noticeable in certain lighting.

There are some situations which can make matching auto paint even more of a challenge. For example, on faded cars, identifying the original shade might not prove so easy. Modern improvements in the science of automotive paint manufacturing means that fading finishes has become less common – what appears to be discoloration on newer vehicles is often an infiltration of airborne contaminates in the clear coat.  Color-match spray is commonly presented as a solution, but use of this product can still result in some discrepancy of shade.

It can prove difficult to find an auto body professional who has mastered the art of effective car paint matching, but there are some out there. The usual method is to start off by rubbing an abrasive paste on a painted area of the vehicle – this works to reveal the true original color by removing any contaminates that may have settled in the clear coat. The scrubbed area is then scanned with a special camera in order to identify the exact shade of paint for duplication. The imaging from the scanner is then used as a model by which to mix the paint, which is then tested on a test-card in order to insure accuracy. The final phase is to apply the color, carefully blending it in with the surrounding area so that seamlessness results.

To those who cherish the look of their vehicle, making sure that any repairs made to the body are unnoticeable after completion is essential. Visit this website to learn more about the color-matching technology used in auto body paint service in Raleigh.
