How Does Recycling Impact the Environment?

Mar 26th 2015 at 4:25 AM

There used to be a time when many people did not give a second thought about tossing a paper, plastic, or aluminum product in the garbage can. Fortunately, environmental consciousness seems to have sent shockwaves throughout modern-day society reminding mere earthlings that the planet’s precious resources are not inexhaustible, but in fact, are depleting.

So, why is recycling important? Simply put, large amounts of waste in landfills emit harmful gasses and chemicals that pollute and destroy the environment. Recycling reduces the waste that inevitably ends up in these landfills. It also helps to salvage natural resources like forests and fertile land. Sadly, many products that people use and discard on a daily basis are not biodegradable. This means that they do not gradually decompose over time. Items, such as Styrofoam, actually never decompose and can remain in a landfill site for centuries. Keeping those types of items out of landfills by recycling significantly helps the environment.

Another positive impact that recycling has on the environment is that it far less energy is used than when manufacturing products from new sources. For example, making paper that is used from recycled pulp is much less energy intensive than creating new paper from trees. In the process, the energy of transporting virgin goods is also saved. When the need for transportation decreases, air pollution is also reduced, which is beneficial for both the economy and public health.

Speaking of pollution, recycling non-biodegradable waste contributes to reducing the greenhouse gasses that deplete the ozone layer. It does this by saving the energy that would otherwise be used in industrial production of new goods. As a result, the fuel usage for manufacturing, which ultimately emits harmful gasses, is dramatically decreased.

Furthermore, there are significant savings tied to using recycled goods because of the lower price points than that of their virgin counterparts. Additionally, there are more and more recycling centers popping up that allow people to make money by bringing in their cans, bottles, newspapers, and other materials. Some individuals find using homemade compost, made from leaves and grass, a highly useful way to keep cash in their pockets. Saving money through recycling helps the environment when people see the monetary benefit, and as result, continue to support the cause.

There are many ways of giving the environment a helping hand. Recycling may be just one method, but it is one that can make an extraordinary impact on the planet. As an ancient Indian proverb so eloquently states “we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, but we borrow it from our children.”
