How Auto Frame Straightening Works
The automobile represents a marvel of modern ingenuity and manufacturing prowess. Thousands of components must work together harmoniously in order to assure a vehicle’s peak performance. That is why a car which has encountered severe damage must be serviced by qualified professionals, particularly if the frame of the vehicle has been compromised in any way. Automobile frame straightening is a fascinating process, and one which can save many cars from the fate of being resigned to the junkyard early.
The repair process begins with placement of the damaged vehicle on the platform of a large machine, known as an automotive frame machine. Newer models will often feature technology which utilizes sonic senders or computerized line-of-sight lasers to determine exactly what type, and the extent of damage that the body has sustained. Heavy-duty chains and clamps are run from specific points on the car’s frame to a pair of towers on the frame machine. Next, powerful brackets are mounted to the pinch welds of the vehicle at four different positions, holding it securely in place.
Once total stability has been achieved, the operator of the machine will then begin to engage the hydraulic ram, causing the towers to slowly pull on the car’s frame at designated points where damage must be corrected. Very gradually, the frame will be pulled back to its original shape, using multi-directional action to provide fine adjustments for a precise result. The frame will be returned to the original manufacturer’s specifications if all repairs are properly performed.
After the frame machine has done its job, the next step is to then verify the accuracy of the work. Technicians will take various measurements to ensure proper straightness of the automobile’s frame, either through electronic measuring systems or more traditional manual methods. Detailed analysis includes review of frame heights, widths, cross-diagonal distances, and wheel base measurements in order to be sure that there is no distortion in the car’s drive train.
From the name, one can logically deduce that an automobile’s frame is vital to its stability. Without the benefit of auto straightening, a badly wrecked vehicle would rarely be considered salvageable, making these machines a crucial piece of equipment in the world of auto body repair. This is especially important when you consider that frame damage is estimated to occur in nearly half of all accidents.
Whether the vehicle in question is a sedan, a truck, or an SUV, if it has been damaged in a serious accident, it’s important to have the body inspected and repaired if necessary.
