Green Card Application – Do You Qualify?

Jun 18th 2015 at 10:57 PM

Being a permanent dweller of the United States is a highly desirable state even though it is not as good as being a citizen of that country. It is no surprise therefore that large numbers of people go through the costly and lengthy green card application process every year. If they succeed, they can live permanently in the US, enjoying the benefit of US laws, and work at most jobs. However, they have to live within the law or else face deportation.

In case you too wish to become a permanent resident of the United States then you’ll need to know all about the green card application process. There is a lot of paperwork to be done and you’ll also need to provide supporting documents to back your green card application form. However, one thing to do before this is determine whether or not you qualify for a green card. There is absolutely no point in filling out the application form unless you actually qualify.

The main categories under which green cards are given are:

  • Family: This is the most common way of getting a green card and it gives priority to  spouses as well as the children younger than 21 of US citizens in addition to the parents of US citizens who are older than 21 years. Siblings of the US citizen as well as married children are also eligible for green card application.
  • Job: Some people who are offered permanent employment in the United States can apply for a green card; in most cases the employer has to get a labour certification first. There is also a special category for people willing to invest a certain amount of money in the US.
  • Asylum or Refugee status: Refugees are required to apply for a green card a year later after being admitted to the US. Asylees can do so at any time but it is best for them to apply as soon as possible.
  • Lottery: The lotter program gives approximately 50,000 visas every year, predominantly to people from countries which have very little immigration to the United States.

US immigration forms should be filled correctly in order to ensure that they do not get rejected. The government also makes it easy for an applicant to trace the progress of his or her petition. Even so, many people choose to hire consultants to help them with their application because the job is lengthy and difficult.
