Four Rules for Storing Art at a Storage Unit

Nov 27th 2015 at 10:22 PM

There are four guidelines that every art collector should know about storing precious art pieces.

1. Store artwork in a climate-controlled facility.

The proper preservation of art requires specific humidity and temperature levels. Professionals say that because art is made up of so many different mediums, it should be stored in a room where the humidity is at 50% and the temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Art should be properly packaged and protected when stored.

Be sure that the piece is clean and free of dust and debris before you pack it up. Dust can cause residue to build up, which can cause damage over time. Protect the corners with strong cardboard and place acid-free paper over the item before placing it in the box.

3. Store artwork upright and off the ground.

Artwork should not be stored flat. It’s important to keep the item upright and don’t lean other items against it. Place the item on a pallet to keep it safe in the event of unexpected moisture.

4. Purchase insurance.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. If a disaster strikes, you’ll be glad that you can file a claim.

Your beloved artwork can be safe in storage. Look for climate controlled storage in Raleigh and visit the website.
