Five Types of Electronics that should be Recycled
Consumers don’t often know what to do with their older, obsolete home electronics after a personal upgrade. Many times, these items find their way to the basement, closet, garage, or attic. Some are thrown into the garbage or left on the curb. However, many of these electronics can see another day if they are properly recycled. Here are five electronics that should be recycled.
Did you know that recycling one million laptops would save the energy equal to the electricity used by over 3,500 homes in the United States every year? Laptops use batteries, and that is why they need to be disposed of properly. Take them to a recycling center, or consider taking them to an Apple retail store that will gladly accept any battery that is Apple branded.
Printers often get tossed into the trash, but they should definitely be taken to a recycling center. Be sure to remove the old cartridges before recycling. The Salvation Army or Goodwill will accept working models. Many retailers offer discounts if you bring your cartridge in for recycling.
Why is it that computers seem to get old and slow very quickly? They become antiquated and have to be retired earlier than it seems they should. Computers contain a mix of hazardous waste and recyclable materials that should not be trashed. Some cities or manufactures have programs that make recycling easy by offering dates and times for easy drop off.
The large glass CRT monitors used to be the standard computer monitors. Today, they are as outdated and out of style as televisions with tubes. Instead of throwing the monitors into the trash bin, take them to a recycling center for safe disposal.
Finally, cell phones seem to become out of date in a matter of months. They get stockpiled into drawers and cabinets after being replaced. A great way to recycle cell phones is to donate them to organizations that help soldiers or victims of domestic abuse. Cell phones can be taken to recycling centers, as well. Statistics say that for every one million cell phones that are recycled, 772 pounds of silver, 35,000 pounds of copper, 33 pounds of palladium, and 75 pounds of gold can be recovered.
Electronics and their components are toxic to people and to the environment if they are thrown away and left to filter into the earth. It is important that we recycle these items properly. Just a little effort is required, and the benefits are worthwhile. Please visit this website for additional information on how to recycle old appliances in Sunnyvale.
