Family History Researchers – Every search begins at home!

Dec 30th 2014 at 11:07 PM

Family history is to dig up your life and your heritage; where can be a better place to begin the search than your own home. Being a genealogy researcher can be fun and challenging hobby for every individual. The first step in research is to gather all the information and then it can be organized and recorded according to each individual. The four sources to gather information are to search your house, recollecting knowledge, interviewing family members about their ancestors and to use the information which has already been gathered by people in the family.

Searching the house can be an intense and time consuming procedure. Legal papers and heirlooms can be valuable to evaluate the lives of ancestors. Some information may be dated and some may not be and hence the latter has to be approximately placed in the family tree information. There are many items which prove to be useful for the family history researchers like autograph books (which shows the people they know), certificates (which can help in learning about the locality of the ancestor with respect to schools and jobs), diaries (which is a mini journal of all the events in that person’s life), photo albums (people can be recognized even if their names are not familiar), jewelry (personalized bracelets or jewelry), resumes (which they have created during their working days) and newspaper clippings (which can signify some important relation between the clipping and the individual).

Recollecting memories and events in the family can help in building the family tree especially in the Italian genealogy. An individual can work backwards gradually with names, birth dates and locations to gather information about the ancestors. Recording the data identifies the conflicting information and also the missing information. This can point to where the next search should be to get the missing information.

Questioning and interviewing the family members and relatives can fill the blanks in the family tree. Native American genealogy researchers find this essential and useful as their history has never been recorded online. Interactions within the family lineage may be the only option for them to gather information. Open ended questions can be asked to the relatives or questions pertaining to certain information can be asked. The interview may be recorded or notes can be taken depending on the comfort of the person who is being interviewed.

Recording information that has already been discovered by another family member can save time and energy. The gathered information should be organized and recorded to build the family tree.
