Facts about Driving While Drunk
Driving while under the influence of alcohol is a problem in the U.S. that causes many accidents and deaths every year. While states have a variety of laws in place to prevent people from driving drunk, people still break these laws and cause accidents. In 2012, 29.1 million people admitted to driving while drunk, according to Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD). However, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that every year just 1.5 million people were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).
Drunk driving usually is higher in young people, especially those from ages 20 to 25, and it more likely to happen at night. This is because young people tend to out to bars late at night to drink with their friends. After a night of partying, the bars eventually close. The young people need to get home, but they are too drunk to drive. Rather than call a cab or let someone else pick them up, they opt to drive. Man people rationalize this decision by saying that they are only buzzed, not drunk. In fact, being buzzed is the same thing as being drunk, as you still have too much alcohol in your blood to drive. Another thing people will say is that they tried to sober before driving, by drinking coffee or perhaps exercising. This is also not an effective measure against being drunk. The only thing that can make a person sober is time. Some people say that they are actually better drivers when they are drunk because they are focusing more and paying closer attention to the road. However, the statistics state otherwise. Someone’s judgment and reaction times are dramatically impaired under the influence of alcohol.
Organizations have been working to prevent drunk driving for quite some times, and many claim to have been successful. This is because when someone loses a loved one to drunk driving, the family is very hurt and motivated to make sure that never happens to someone against. Drunken driving laws can be very strict, but drunken driving offenders are also very likely to commit the crime again. Drunk drivers often get their licenses suspended. In some cases, drunk drivers are required to get a special apparatus installed in their vehicles. Before the driver can start the car, he or she has to blow into this apparatus, and it will measure the driver’s blood alcohol content. If the blood alcohol content is too high, the car will not start.
