Explore The Life History Of The Greatest Neurological Scientist – Dr. Michael Mullan
Not many scientists have researched in the field of neurological disorders. But there have been some highly adept and enthusiastic researchers who dedicated their entire life in exploring more and more about such diseases. The name of Dr. Michael Mullan strikes first to the mind when talking about such researchers. He is a man of passion and utmost devotion. He did not only have the interest in neuroscience but also worked towards it with considerable zeal and ardour.
Know about Michael Mullan’s Educational Background
Michael Mullan undertook the degree of MBBS for his under graduation. The period from 1981 to 1985 is considered as Dr. Mullan’s best phase in terms of academic achievements. During this period, the Royal Free Hospital awarded him with the Ethel Williams Scholarship. This scholarship was awarded to him in acknowledgment of his research work concerning the Alzheimer’s disease.
For his commendable work in the field of molecular genetics of Familial Alzheimer’s disease and clinical studies, he also joined as a Registrar in the Bethlem and Maudsley Special Health Authority Research. Then in between the years 1991 and 1993, he was also presented the Hoechst Elective Award for his study of genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. Unlike other students of his age group, Michael Mullan had keen interest in health care, memory improvement, neuroscience and other similar areas. Today, he has become successful in reaping positive results of his interest which he has been nurturing since a long time.
Experiences Attained by Dr. Mullan
During his academic career, Dr. Mullan along with his colleague Dr. Fiona Crawford developed the first animal model for Alzheimer. In the year 1992, he joined the University of South Florida and established Roskamp Laboratories. Here, he used his practical knowledge of Alzheimer and molecular genetics in teaching a Behavioural Medicine Course to the Medical students. Here, he also served as a Ph.D. supervisor to multiple programs. Dr. Mullan is currently serving as the CEO and President at Roskamp Institute which was founded by him in 1998.
This institute is located in Sarasota city of Florida. It is a non-profit biomedical research institute which focuses on novel treatments for neurological disorders including Traumatic Brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Autism. Here, he also developed the Brain Reserve Index Score. He is also serving as the CEO at Star Scientific Inc and is the President of Sci-Brain. He holds more than a dozen patents and about 200 scientific publications to his name.
What is Brain Reserve Index?
Dr. Mullan is a well-known neuropsychiatric scientist and has done exemplary work in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and other related brain disorders. At the Roskamp Institute, he alongwith his team of neuroscientists developed a Brain Reserve Index. This index gives the numerical estimates of the risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease in a person’s brain. This index is winning accolades from the scientists around the world and has proved to be the most accurate index discovered so far.
Dr. Mullan has not concentrated his research to only Alzheimer’s disease but also to other disorders including dementia, Parkinson, Gulf War Syndrome and many more.
