Ethylene Glycol Inhibitor- A Solution To Prevent Corrosion

Oct 30th 2014 at 1:39 AM

In the mist of globalization, we are focusing on inorganic and organic chemicals for better safety of properties and industrial applications. Whenever the safety is concerned, humans always desired for a better and less corrosive alternative. Ethylene glycol is a well known anti-freezing agent used for industrial application. Metal gets creviced at the time of heating and thermal storage. Inhibited ethylene glycol is a fluid that provides protection of metal against corrosion.

Propylene glycol and ethylene glycol are two well known organic compounds used as anti-freeze and heat transfer fluids. Corrosion affects industries as corruption destroys government. Uninhibited glycol may cause adverse corrosion and can cause system failure. To reduce the threat of corrosion, Mono ethylene glycols came into process. These corrosion inhibitors are added to the solution to protect the metal from getting corroded.

To prevent corrosion related problems, inhibited ethylene glycol acts as buffer to organic acids and protects the metal surface by passivizing them. Mono ethylene glycol prevents further formation of acid by absorption and modifies metal to make it susceptible to corrosion. Ethylene glycol/propylene must be inhibited or it can corrode the metal by chemically attacking its surface. Mono ethylene glycol is less viscous in nature and must be stored under condition to prevent contamination in water. Heat transfer efficiency of the system will improve by mixing it with water.

MEG is a stable chemical and will not deteriorate if stored below 40 degree C, but it should not be stored for more than 6 months. Problems of freezing and cooling in radiators, automotive engines and cooling machines can be stopped using inhibited mono ethylene glycol. There are many benefits associated with ethylene glycol such as:

• It increases the life span of metal.

• Provides protection against scale deposition and corrosion.

• Because of its low viscosity, it provides better heat transfer efficiency and low temperature management.

• Being a corrosion inhibiter it prevents corrosion in multiple ways.

• It does not form sludge and reduces degradation.

• Maintenance work will get reduced by using water-glycol solution added with corrosion inhibitors.

• Due to its efficient properties it has become susceptible to pitting, cracking, corrosion, leakages and other loses due to PHE.

• It prevents low pH attack on the system and maintains most heat transfer.

Mono ethylene glycol and other inhibitors are among the most sound corrosion inhibited packages. There are many reputed chemical companies in the market selling and developing anti-corrosive fluids to prevent metal. Researchers and experts are searching for new technologies to develop more effective agents.
