Early Warning Signs of a Failing Roof

Apr 28th 2015 at 1:57 AM

Every homeowner should learn the signs of a failing roof. It's an important aspect of you and your family's safety, but something that is, unfortunately, overlooked all-too-commonly. The warning signs of a roof that's about to cave in may or may not be obvious to the novice homeowner, but with proper maintenance and inspection, it is something that can be found out quite easily.

Every now and again, I hear about how a homeowner couldn't believe what they had experienced: Their roof caved in, but they never saw it coming. While sometimes, this immediate caving in, or similar type of damage, of their roof is sudden and unexpected - perhaps due to inclement weather, or some other major contributing factor - oftentimes, the warning signs are clear… if they had just done some basic inspections. To avoid this from happening to you, we've gathered some pointers over our years of experience dealing with such catastrophes that will, hopefully, save you from the same pain.

Moisture in your attic? Yeah, that's gonna be a problem…

If you've been up to your attic any time recently and noticed any type of moisture build-up, it's probably a safe to think something may be wrong. Moisture typically accumulates in attics that are poorly ventilated, and, because of this, can be one of the first warning signs of a roof on its' way to caving in. Fortunately, calling a roofing Contractor professional to tend to this problem is probably your best bet.

If tiles or shingles are missing, don't wait around…

Bi-annual roof check-ups can be an easy way to stop certain issues from becoming even bigger in regards to your roof. Therefore, make it a point to get up on your roof at least twice a year - preferably once during spring and again in the fall. While you're up there, if you notice any missing tiles or shingles, this can be a sign of a roof emergency. Call a professional immediately and have them assess the extent of the damage. I promise you, it won't be in vein.

Roof rot isn't a laughing matter… act fast!

Let's face it: Many homeowners are naive to the condition of their roof. They think a little rotting here and there can't hurt anyone. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception that can cause great harm or danger to your home and its' occupants. If you notice any signs of rotting, it is important that you contact a roofing professional immediately. They will be able to assess the damage and fix it accordingly.

Spotting is a serious condition, and should be treated immediately.

Again, performing bi-annual or semi-regular roof checks won't do anything but help your cause. Whether you're up on the roof, or down below, you may have noticed water spots. If so, this may be an early sign of a roof that's about to give out. If you notice anything peculiar about your roof's condition, such as spots, call a professional as soon as possible.

Curling and buckling can be pesky, but it can also be a problem!

Sometimes, your shingles will start to curl away as if being peeled back by an imaginary pest. In actuality, this happens due to humidity or hot air from your attic. Because of this, your utility bills can begin to skyrocket, making it important for you to call a professional as soon as possible.

Fortunately, a lot of these early warning signs of a failing roof can be caught early enough if proper precautions are taken. Unfortunately, it'll take a little bit of your time to make sure your family and your roof are safe and sound. But don't let that stop you! Acting now can save you lots of time, energy and money down the line.
