Different Types Of Batteries For Your Car

Mar 31st 2015 at 11:11 PM

Most batteries produce electricity by suspending lead and lead dioxide plates in a liquid solution made up of 62 percent water and 38 percent sulfuric acid. This combination produces an electrical process that releases electrons and thereby produces electricity for your car to use. There are several different kinds of batteries that vary in function, design, and price.

A wet/flooded battery is one of the least expensive batteries. It is composed of a liquid solution and lead plates. This kind of battery is generally long lasting, however in order for it to last, some maintenance needs to be performed. This involves testing or refilling the liquid inside. Because of this, these batteries can spill or even leak if overfilled.

A calcium-calcium battery is slightly more expensive than a flooded battery. The process of producing electricity is similar except that the metal plates in the battery are coated with a calcium alloy. The calcium alloy helps the battery discharge more slowly and also prevents the liquid solution from being lost as quickly. This means less maintenance. The downside is that it is susceptible to overcharging, which can seriously damage the battery.

A VRLA, or valve regulated lead acid battery is sealed and therefore requires no maintenance. These batteries are quite a bit more expensive than flooded or calcium batteries, partly because they use additives or glass mats to contain the liquid solution within the battery. This keeps them from leaking or spilling, as the liquid is held in suspension and will not actually flow. While strong and generally small, they are a more expensive option.

Deep cycle batteries are attractive because they provide electricity for longer than other batteries. To carry a charge for longer, they are built with thicker metal plates that store more energy. Even though they can produce electricity for a sustained period of time, they can deplete quickly under high loads. As such, they are used in lighter vehicles such as boats or golf carts that need less amounts of power over longer periods of time.

Lithium Ion batteries use a different chemical process to produce power. They are very lightweight and can be recharged many times without diminishing their total storage capacity. They are very efficient, but also very expensive. Generally they are used for electric cars where weight is a primary consideration.
