Defining various aspects of Montessori education

Oct 21st 2015 at 4:47 AM

Parents feel that Montessori education is quite important for their kids, without even realizing what exactly falls under this system of educating kids. Family members and other acquaintances should first understand what exactly it is and how kids can benefit from this system. Here are a few quick facts about it:

The Montessori approach is child-centred – kids are independent to choose materials that appeal to them. It is based on the fact that children learn effortlessly if they are interested. Montessori teachers tailor lessons to suit each child’s ability and demonstrated interest.

Montessori for children is to encourage them to reach his or her full potential in all areas of the education. There is no defined line over the curriculum. Every child learns indecently to his limits and maintains momentum without having to get engaged in competition with other children.

Teachers do not try to dominate the classroom, rather act as a guide. They strive to encourage kids and give them meaningful feedback to harness their individual skills. False praises and extrinsic rewards do have negative influences on kids and hence they are avoided in Montessori education.

Special materials are used in the classroom. These materials are appealing to eyes, hands-on and designed to help children to concentrate through the process of learning. Especially designed to boost kid’s knowledge and potential, these materials introduce concepts in concrete terms, which is important to enable abstract learning and reasoning when appropriate as per kid’s age.

Basically, materials are designed in such a way that it boosts their learning while allowing them to spot their own errors, self-assess and complete their own tasks. This also helps kids in gaining self-sufficiency and independence. In this education system, errors are viewed as a part of learning system rather than something to feel ashamed of. Teachers believe that mistakes are critical to learning and also help other students to learn from experiences.

Students learn in a different setting – working alone in a quite classroom to applying lessons learned out in the fields with peers. This facilitates both academic and social growth. The setting also kens their leadership and negotiation skills sharp. It also requires students to exercise flexible thinking strategies to ensure their success.

The fundamental of Montessori for children is that kids learn more in a flexible and social environment that supports and respect their unique development needs. They learn in a variety of ways and store new information in multiple ways.
