Common Issues With Dogs

Dec 18th 2015 at 12:56 AM

Your dog depends on you for everything. You have to feed him, groom him and keep him healthy. He can’t tell you when he is feeling bad or when something is wrong, so you have to stay alert and be aware. It helps to understand a bit about the common health issues that occur in dogs, so you can watch out for them in your own furry friend.

Ear infections are quite common, especially in dogs with floppy ears. Dogs with ears that stand up usually don’t suffer from ear infections as often. Floppy ears trap moisture and are a good breeding ground for bacteria. This can lead to ear infections. Additionally, ear infections in dogs may be caused by mites, yeast and excessive hair growth. Your dog may indicate he has an ear infection by shaking or tilting his head or scratching at his ears. You may also notice your dog seems to lose his balance or smell an odor coming from the ear.

Another common issue is worms. These can usually be avoided by administering a regular worm medication, but if they do occur, you need to know the signs. Worms can be fatal, especially in puppies. The signs that your dog has worms include diarrhea, weight loss, changes in eating habits and scooting on the bottom.

Fleas are a very common issues. They are not only annoying to dogs but they also are annoying to humans. Nobody wants an infestation in their home. Prevention is key when it comes to fleas. Make sure you are using some type of flea medication to keep fleas off your dog. Since fleas multiply quickly, you want to catch any flea issue as soon as possible. Fleas will cause itching and redness in both dogs and humans.

Hot spots are another concern for dogs. These are swollen, red areas on the skin. They are a bacteria infection that need treated. Anything can lead to a hot spot. They are mainly caused by your dog itching the skin, allowing bacteria to get under it.

All of the problems listed here should be discussed with a vet if you notice any signs in your dog. While some situations, like fleas, can often be handled on your own, if the situation is severe, the vet should always be consulted to ensure the issue is cleared up quickly and your dog is comfortable again.
