Choosing The Best Type Of Fence For Your Outdoor Space

Mar 2nd 2015 at 3:12 AM

You have decided to get a fence, but you have several options available to you regarding what kind of fence you can get. The type of fence you get depends largely on the reason you want a fence. Whether it’s for security, appearance, or other reasons, this article will help you decide which type of fence is best for your outdoor space.

Everyone loves a white picket fence. It’s romantic and classic, reminiscent of traditional countryside gardens. But just as Tom Sawyer went through pains to whitewash his fence, so will you. Wooden fences have to be painted often or else they look dingy and cracked. You should also be advised that wood warps over time, so before long you will have to replace the fence altogether. The look of a white picket fence is nice, but to get it you might consider another material, like vinyl or aluminum, that is longer lasting and easier to maintain. Another option is to mix the material in your fencing. You could have a wooden white picket fence built at the front of your home, where it will get more curb appeal, but in your backyard you could have a hurricane fence built.

A hurricane fence is inexpensive and easy to install, but it isn’t the most visually appealling. It also isn’t the strongest option for fencing, and people can usually climb over it or cut it. If you’re putting up a fence for containment, for a dog for example, hurricane fences are one of the easier types for dogs to get through or dig under.

Another common type of fence is iron, which can often include ornamentation. This is because it’s relatively strong and has a classic, elegant look. It also requires little maintenance. However, it doesn’t provide much privacy, since you can quite easily see through the bars. For more privacy, you might consider a tall privacy fence. These aren’t as welcoming but will give you privacy if you want it. Be cautioned though: Sometimes privacy fences can decrease home value. They also aren’t allowed by some homeowners associations because the make people in the neighborhood wonder if you’re hiding anything.

As a general rule, you should check you city and neighborhood regulations before having a fence installed. There are often regulations for what type of fence you can build, how high it can be, and how close to the street or sidewalk it can be.

You have a lot to consider when deciding on a new outdoor fence.
