Candles: The Ultimate Home Accessory

Oct 24th 2012 at 9:59 PM

In the days before electricity, candles were kept around the home as a practical essential item. They were made of tallow and provided precious light when the sun went down. Without candles, the day would end with each sunset, and while candles certainly added ‘mood lighting’ to an abode, it’s unlikely that families thought of them as accessories. Candles were there to do a job, and people didn’t spend much time wondering why there were not any different scents or styles to choose from. Thankfully, electricity was invented, and candles went from being purely practical to an accoutrement. As it was no longer completely necessary for households to keep a large supply of candles on hand, candle makers began to get creative. Thanks to their brainstorming, we have all different types of candles to choose from today. Learn about some of the most popular ones that we’ve highlighted below, and once in a while, turn out all your lights and let candles do the work. You’ll be transported back in time to a place
where light was provided purely from these wicked wonders, and you’ll realize anew why candles have such a lasting allure.

Some popular types of candles as home accessories include:

• Votives – Available in a variety of heights and widths, the votives that are most popular are small and portable. They’re a staple in any disaster preparedness kit, as they are easily moved from one room to another and can be clustered together to form a collective stream of light. Votives as well as the other sizes of candles can be found in nearly every scent imaginable. Looking for a sweet escape? Cinnamon bun, French Vanilla, Chocolate Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Gingerbread Cookie or Crème Brulee candles perfectly capture those confections. More floral-inspired? Keep your candle flower garden year-round by purchasing Freesia, Hyacinth or Rose Bush. If you choose candles more for their aesthetic value than for their scent, you may even opt for unscented varieties. It’s up to you.

• Floating candles – Talk about a conversation starter! Place floating candles in your pool and jazz up any evening shindig, or fill an ornate glass bowl with water and float tiny candles that are memorable lit or unlit.

• Tea lights – Called ‘girlie candles’ by many a man, these tiny candles are often tucked in the middle of wedding centerpieces or placed inside little candle holders and arranged in artsy configurations. Tea lights do not burn for very long, but they do provide a few hours of flickering light.

• Soy candles are particularly popular home accessories, as have a very clean burn. Their very presence inside a home tells visitors that an eco-conscious person lives inside. They are popular for both practical and aesthetic reasons, as soy candles can be found in nearly any scent, shape and size that wax candles feature.

• Tapers – It is likely that the first candles were tapers. The ones you’ll find in candle stores today offer much more variation, however. Enjoy bright and cheery colors to match any décor, and breathe in the vapors of heavily scented wax or soy.
