An initiative towards sustainable infrastructure
When it comes to the most talked about and least understood words, then ‘sustainability’ remains at the top. This is a global topic of heated discussions and often surrounded by differing interpretations, and treated superficially. For most countries, corporates and individuals, the concept of sustainability is basically the preservation of the environment and critical development related issues including the continual social growth, efficient use of resources, and stable economy.
Herein, one of the most talked about term is the ‘sustainable environment’ wherein infrastructure includes a set of structural elements to support daily activities, and which influences the direction of human society. The term ‘sustainable infrastructure’ outlines the designing, building and operating of various structural elements in a way that influences the social, economic and ecological processes that aid in maintaining human equity, diversity and the natural systems.
Sustainable infrastructure is important to sustainable community developments, future well-being and day-to-day lives of individuals. Infrastructure that is built today has the potential to shape future communities, so it is a lot more important than one can think of. There can be five key infrastructure areas that can be important for sustainable development; and, these are – transportation, energy, land use, waste management and governance.
If you talk about basic infrastructure, it is not a luxury that can be delayed while waiting for improved economic conditions. In real means, it is a pre-condition for supporting and creating these conditions. In a country, whether developed or developing, compromised access to or lack of sanitation, clean water, energy or transportation influences the well-being and the economy. For this reason, the provision of a sustainable infrastructure is an urgent global requirement.
The short-term provision of infrastructure is not of utmost importance. The crucial thing is the long-term planning and designing of infrastructure that is accountable for its impact as well as its operational needs and use. The infrastructure has to be sustainable to benefit future generations and contribute to the impending growth. Providing this kind of infrastructure is more like an investment that pays off many times over. Almost every country across the globe would want to be a part of this kind of growth and would intend to bring into existence a Center for Sustainable Infrastructure to work on their plan and design.
The infrastructure has a significant impact on the world so the long-term as well as short-term plans should be around protecting future generations. Herein, planners and engineers are entrusted with the responsibilities to set a benchmark with their design that benefits the environment and the people around it. Serous talk on sustainability has to be initiated that ultimately takes the form of a serious action.
