Now, with the growth in information technology industry, the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has come in prominence. Also referred as Chief Technical Officer, A Chief Technology Officer specifically focuses on the technological issues of an organization. This falls under an executive level position. The role has become prevalent in industries today. A CTO has numerous responsibilities like any other c-level officer. He or she focuses on the information technology of the core company and other supporting technologies as well as takes care of long term issues of the organization. The fundamental technology of any product that is sold to consumers is managed by CTO. However, in manufacturing or shipping or banking, developing and working on new techniques is CTO’s job.
Nevertheless, the role and responsibilities of a Chief Technological Officer may differ starkly with that of a chief information officer. A CIO’s role mostly comprises of adapting existing technologies to solve organizational problems. If any industry utilizes technology, a Chief Information Officer holds a prominent place within the industry. It is a job title especially conferred to the most senior executive of an information technology industry. First and most important role of a CIO is of a business leader as the whole management of IT resources is carried out by CIO. Be it directing the workforce of the enterprise or working in way of increasing profit using ICT structure, CIO oversees everything. In other words, Chief Information Officer links both IT professionals and Non-IT professionals for effective results. As the importance of IT has increased in modern organizations, the prominence of CIO position has mounted. As argued, CIOs perform large number of roles and hence the chances of failure are also very high. The fact that risk factor for this role is extreme makes the job title of Chief Information Officer one of the most highly paid jobs.
