A Brief History On The RV

Mar 23rd 2015 at 4:12 AM

The recreational vehicle is one of America’s favorite ways to travel. It offers all the comforts of a home, with the mobility of a car. However, did you know that the RV history dates back to the 1800s? Gypsy’s originally used large covered wagons to travel from place to place while living in Europe. Because they didn’t have permanent homes, they lived out of their wagons and carried their belongings with them. While pioneers were also using covered wagons in the United States during that same period, they were used mainly for transportation purposes instead of homes, like the Gypsies.

Around the turn of the century, when cars first came on the market, outdoor enthusiasts began looking for ways to make them camping friendly. They started making alterations like backseats that could fold into bed, sinks and hidden chamber pots. Then, once people began traveling more due to the opening of national parks and tourist sites, people began looking for ways to better accommodate their travels.

While the first RV was documented in Canada in 1910, they didn’t make their appearance in the U.S. until a few years later. Instead of the home-on-wheels we are used to today, they were mainly trailers that could be towed behind other vehicles. Most, at this point, were made by hand. They didn’t become commercially available until 1930s. During the Great Depression, many used RVs as an inexpensive housing option. However, once World War II hit, the manufacturing of these vehicles were halted due to rationing restrictions.

After World War II, manufacturing started up again and RVs became more popular than ever. It became an inexpensive way for returning soldiers to travel with their families and relax. Because of this boost in sales, manufacturers began looking for ways to better their models. They began to evolve in design and offer more modern comforts.

During the 1960s, the first RV to be combined with an automobile was introduced as the motorhome. Because it was still a fairly basic model, most did not include toilets or refrigerators. However, slowly but surely, manufacturers began innovating ways to combine all of the modern technology into their vehicles. Now days, it’s not uncommon to find washers and dryers, satellites, showers, bathtubs, refrigerators, and ovens in RVs.

Because the amenities in the RV continue to expand based on technological advancements, many are deciding to give up their permanent houses and opt for a home on wheels. Others find them a comfort when out camping or during a long road trip. Whatever the reason for using one might be, recreational vehicles have revolutionized both the vacationing and traveling world for decades.
