5 Tips for conducting an Effective Assembly Program

May 15th 2015 at 4:40 AM

School assemblies have always been an effective tool for communicating ideas to students and open up their views on various issues that are relevant to society. From raising school spirit to making them aware of complex topics like bullying, drug abuse, etc., school assemblies is a major component of any school's curriculum. Choosing a motivational speaker to address the children on such sensitive issues often proves to render better results.  Educating children is a great responsibility, hence when you plan to deliver such important and sensitive issues the assembly conducted should be well planned and effective. To conduct an effective assembly program you need to keep in mind the following useful tips to embark on your preparation and planning:

•    Make the assembly interesting. Students have hard time learning when they are disinterested. For them to listen and learn, you need to win their interest and attention. Ask any educator and they will tell you that the most challenging part of teaching is catching and keeping their subjects' attention. When planning for an assembly, be sure to create a starting activity that will gain the audience's undivided attention. A good tactic would be dressing up your assembly hall in an intriguing and thought-provoking manner that will keep them wondering what the activity is all about.
•    Make sure your speaker's has engaging content. Coordinating with your invited speaker is a key to making your assembly a success. From the get go, make sure that the main speech is tied to your guiding theme, along with all other portions of the program. You will lose audience interest if you start jumping focus between different, unrelated topics.
•    Keep the assembly short. Children remains attentive for shorter spans, thus while addressing them grabbing their attention, helps, this still doesn't change the fact that they can very easily get board and wander their minds off. Design the assembly around a specific time frame and follow the schedule so that there is no wasted time on dead air.
•    Secure a substantial message. While you should give your keynote speaker the freedom to express his thoughts, his way, it is important to make sure that his message has substance and is not pure talk. The goal of motivational assemblies should always be to motivate and inspire, and this is something that you should remember when hiring your main speaker.
•    After assembly activities. To support what they learn on the assembly, it helps rehashing their memories with after-assembly activities, such as open-forums and extended classroom discussions.
