4 Signs of a True Friendship

Dec 7th 2015 at 11:00 AM

1. Friends always push us into accepting ourselves for who and what we are.

Among our greatest of faults is that of self-criticism. True friends are there to lift us up whenever we are down. And of course, that makes us feel better, so we need this sort of encouragement in our lives on a regular basis.

It may be when we are feeling inadequate before or after a job interview. It could be after receiving some harsh criticism. Or it might be something else entirely different. It's the true friend who will always question our negativity. A real friend has the capacity to boost our self-esteem in a natural and caring manner.

2. When we are in the wrong, a true friend calls us out.

True friends identify our flaws, though not in a spiteful way, but purely for accountability’s sake. They do not merely tell us about our positives, they also let us know about our negatives. In other words, they are supportive on both sides of the equation.

This is what tends to set a true friendship apart from those that are weaker. A superficial friend will not say anything negative. Not to our faces, anyhow. A real friend - someone who is really trusted - will tell us precisely what's on their mind. Those that are straightforward and honest are among the most important types of friendships we can and should maintain.

3. They're ever present.

Perhaps the best gift from any friend would be awareness and full attention. A real friend will be present and pay close attention to not only their needs but ours also.

Interestingly, in a study conducted in 2012 in the U.K., the mere presence of a mobile phone has the capacity to reduce that all important personal connection. A real friend will put down their phone and focus on us when we need them.

4. They really listen.

It's likely that you've been intent on conversing with someone, only for them to turn the entire focus of the conversation onto themselves. The conversation becomes entirely one sided. A true friend would never do this.

Having the ability to conduct a healthy two-way dialogue with another person is likely going to strengthen that relationship in a particularly meaningful way. And the experts agree that there's a key to a balanced conversation and that is when both parties actively pay attention to one another. People who have the ability to listen also have the ability to validate the emotions of others. It shows that what the other person is communicating makes entire sense.
