Jul 24th 2015 at 4:13 AM

Southern California, and the San Diego area in particular, offer a number of great camping destinations to choose from. Whether one enjoys camping on the beach, close to the city, among lions and tigers, or while enjoying watersports, this area has it all.

Most don’t associate Southern California with great camping. Rather, most view this as a place to go for sandy beaches and fun at theme parks. Yet Southern California camping enthusiasts will tell you that this area has enough fun and exciting camping spots to satisfy even the most ardent of outdoorsmen while also providing a ton of fun and excitement for people of all ages.

For those in and around the San Diego area, there are plenty of great campsites with loads of fun activities to enjoy all within driving distance of the city. Those making their first forays into camping should consider the San Diego KOA Resort. With an on-site pool, as well as air conditioned cabins that feature kitchens and TVs, this offers enough amenities to keep amateur campers feeling comfortable, yet enough of an outdoor atmosphere to make it feel like one is still “roughing it.”

Camping along the ocean is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Carlsbad State Beach and San Elijo Campground both offer that. There are also bike and hiking trails to enjoy, as well as nearby stores and restaurants. Yet it’s the easy access to the beach that makes these spots so popular. A similar camping experience can also be found at Campland on the Bay in Mission Bay.

San Diego is well-known for its famous zoo and wildlife park. Those wanting to truly experience what it would be like living with these animals can do so with the Roar and Snore experience that the zoo offers. Campers sleep on a spot overlooking the African Plains area of the park, allowing them terrific views of all sorts of exotic animals.

A more hardcore camping experience can be found at the Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. Die-hard campers can pitch their tents, while others can choose to enjoy the park’s unique floating cabins. This is a great spot to fish or canoe. For those who want a similar experience with the added option of water sports, Lake Jennings Park and the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA Aquatic Park are both terrific options.

For people looking to get away from the area, more great camping destinations can be found just a few short hours away. Doheny State Beach in Dana Point or the Indian Oaks Trailer Ranch in Temecula are just a couple of the many great options to choose from.

Who says that California isn’t for campers? Each of the aforementioned locales is sure to provide a ton of chances for those looking to get away from it all the chance to do so. Outdoor lovers should visit this website to find camping store in San Diego that provide more information on the area’s best campsites.
