Hydrail: Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trains

Aug 13th 2019 at 12:38 AM

To make rail a zero-emission mode of transportation, commuter trains can be powered electrically, through direct contact with overhead, high-voltage lines.  However, building the infrastructure to support extensive overhead power lines can be very expensive, and can delay the development of electrified rail service.

Hydrail is an alternative approach to electrification using fuel cells to generate electricity and provide propulsion for a Hydrogen fuel cell train.

As the demand for zero-emission transportation increases, solutions such as hydrogen fuel cell commercial passenger trains are being made into reality. With Hydrogenics fuel cell technology providing the core power, in September 2018, France-based rail manufacturer Alstom launched the Coradia iLint, the world’s first passenger hydrogen fuel cell train.
